In the Visual Editor how do I tell which variant I am actually looking at?
I am previewing a personalized story and I cannot tell what the editor is showing me. Is it the default content, a specific audience variant, or an experiment variation? The colour and copy look different from the base but I have no reliable confirmation of which state I am in.
Is there a proper indicator for this, or am I meant to infer it from the content itself?

There is a reliable indicator. When you open a preview link generated from the experience or experiment editor, a preview widget appears in the bottom-right corner. It shows the active experience, experiment, audience, variant, and locale, so you can confirm exactly which state you are viewing rather than inferring it from the content.
A few things to check if it is not behaving as expected. Preview links are valid for 24 hours, and they are shareable and can be regenerated when they expire. Preview itself requires the slots integrated, the slot versions matching between your code and the published slot, and the domain listed in your trusted origins. Also note that a paused experience shows the default slot content, which can look like nothing is happening even though preview is working. Full details are in the preview mode reference.
