Contentful Personalization is gated to a plan tier we do not have

Asked by Darren Mitchell on

We recently requested a quote to enable Contentful Personalization and were informed it requires a premium tier, custom pricing in the region of $2k or more per month. That is well above the budget line we have approved for this initiative, and frankly above what the personalization use case alone justifies for us at this stage.

We are otherwise satisfied with Contentful and have no intention of changing CMS. My question for the group: which personalization or experimentation options work with the Contentful plan we already pay for, and what do their entry price points actually look like? Concrete figures appreciated.

The structural thing to understand is that the plan gating only applies to tools that live inside the CMS. Anything that operates in your frontend instead, mapping the components that render your Contentful entries to its own slots or flags, does not know or care which Contentful tier you are on. Your content API access is the same on every plan.

That describes most of the CMS-agnostic layer: Croct, GrowthBook, and similar tools all sit on the application side. The trade-off is that the initial mapping is developer work in your codebase rather than a toggle in the Contentful UI, so budget a small dev task for setup regardless of which vendor you pick. After that the day-to-day usually moves to a dashboard your team runs without releases.

Concrete figures for one of the options vhale mentioned, since you asked for numbers: Croct's Growth plan starts at $100 per month billed annually, covering 20k MAU, 20 content slots, and 15 experiences or experiments. There is also a free plan at 10k MAU with no credit card, which is enough to pilot one experiment on your existing Contentful setup before committing budget. Current limits are on the pricing page.

For comparison shopping, get the same three numbers from every vendor you evaluate: monthly traffic ceiling, how many concurrent experiments, and what the overage costs. Entry prices in this category range from free tiers to five figures a month, so the spread is wide enough that the shortlist mostly builds itself once you fix your budget.
