# Can I use VTEX order placement as the primary goal of an experiment?

Asked by Larissa Prado on 2026-09-02. Tags: vtex, experiments, conversion-goals.

I set up an experiment on a VTEX landing experience and I want the purchase to
count as the conversion. The problem is the order event was not showing up as a
goal option when I opened the experiment settings, so I could not select it.

How do I wire order placement as the primary goal? Thanks in advance.

On VTEX the order placement already records a conversion automatically as
Goal Completed alongside your store events, so you are not missing an
integration step. The reason it was not in the dropdown is the ordering: the
goal event has to have been tracked at least once before it appears as a
selectable option in the experiment.

So place a test order (or wait for real traffic to send one through), and once
that order event has actually fired, order placement shows up in the goal
list and you can set it as the primary goal on the experiment. Traffic
allocation and your 2 to 5 variants are configured on the experiment itself in
the same place.

This is the same tracked-first behaviour people run into when an
[event is missing from the goal dropdown](/answers/experiment-goal-not-in-dropdown).

That worked once traffic flowed through and a real order came in. The
goal appeared and I could pick it as primary. Thank you.

Same pattern shows up on the Shopify side with
[purchase as a conversion goal](/answers/hydrogen-purchase-conversion-goal),
the conversion-indicating event has to be tracked before you can pick it. Good
sign that it is consistent across the commerce integrations.
