# Do logged-in shoppers stay in the same variant across devices on Hydrogen?

Asked by juanpe on 2026-08-29. Tags: hydrogen, experiments, identity.

lots of our shoppers browse on mobile and then buy later on desktop. We run an
experiment on the product page and I do not want someone to see variant A on
their phone and then variant B on their laptop, that would be a jarring
experience and probably muddies the results too.

We have Shopify customer accounts set up on the storefront. Does Croct keep the
assigned variant sticky across devices for these shoppers, or is it per device?

It depends on whether the shopper is identified, and yours are. Variant
assignment is sticky, so an identified user stays on the same variation
wherever they show up. The assignment travels with the profile, not the device,
so mobile-then-desktop keeps them consistent.

The split to keep in mind is the anonymous case. An anonymous visitor cannot
carry an assignment across devices, because there is nothing linking the two
sessions, they only stay consistent within their own profile scope on that
device. Once a shopper is identified, cross-device consistency kicks in and
keeps them on the same variation.

matches what I am seeing in testing, my logged-in test account holds the
variant across both machines and the anonymous one does not. good, thanks

The piece that makes it work on your stack: logged-in Shopify customer accounts
are identified on every request, so Croct knows who they are each time and can
apply the sticky assignment. That identify step is what turns the abstract
"sticky for identified users" into actual cross-device consistency for your
shoppers, so make sure the customer-account identify is wired and you are set.
